Welcome to Phase III! If you're wondering what the previous phases are, then head on to my Minecraft blog posts!
After trying out the trial version and briefly settling upon my first spawn, the rebellious me decided to go on an adventure and start my Minecraft life elsewhere. It's a whole new world to explore!
I jumped into my architect cap and start master planning.
My ideal spot is somewhere by the cliff overlooking the vast sea. With this, I hopped onto my boat and bon voyage!
After several in-game days, I was finally greeted by the sight of a beach next to the plains biome. Almost immediately, I jumped into my architect cap and start master planning:
I love having water features to soften the #hardscape of any building. My plan is to have an outdoor pool with fishes in it, overlooked by the kitchen and dining area.
Here is where I realise another Minecraft exclusive feature: Minecraft water physics. You think it'll behave the same with any liquid in real life. BIG NO!!
After a quick Google and tonnes of buckets of water, I finally managed to create a pond of still water instead of flowing water.
They are tedious and confusing, yes, nevertheless am so proud of the final outcome too. Woohoo!
The traditional method of bringing Mother Nature into the built environment is via a courtyard. A more modern approach is having vegetation growing in the house (and cut a hole for bigger canopies to grow on top of the house). I incorporated this idea in my Minecraft house too:
P/S I later find out this design doesn't work in Minecraft due to Minecraft glass' properties. More on this in future blog posts!
The video and GIF above are snapshots to my approach in architecture. As proof of how framing a view works, here is my view towards the ocean... or a zombie on a chicken. You're welcome.
Can you imagine all the hard work poured out? *Yes, all that clicking on the mouse!* I laid these blocks one by one with my tiny Minecraft hands. I need nourishment to keep working: man needs to eat!
As an architectural graduate, I adapt solutions according to site conditions.
Now, let me present you a question of survival and evolution: how does one live a self-sufficient life?
Back to the roots, back to the source of food and thereafter: farming! Everyone's first crop is, of course, #wheat.
Wheat is grown from seeds, easily obtained by punching grass (LOL). Here, Minecraft emulates real-life farming where you need plough the soil next to a water source before planting these seeds.
The simplest, traditional way of farming is to have them in rows. Again, I am an architectural graduate and am trained to adapt solutions according to existing site conditions. Living by the cliff is the ideal circumstance for terrace farming!
I also tried planting watermelon seeds (I forgot where I found them) and look at my proud baby! If only watermelons are as big as they were to Minecraft character's scale!
By this stage, I can feed myself solely on bread (from wheat) and watermelon. But hey, being a fancy person who preferred a variety of food, I need meat!
The easiest Minecraft #livestock, especially when you're just starting out, are chickens, sheep and cows. These are the first livestock you should farm because they only need seeds to lure and breed:
Look how much they love me! They are surrounding me like a saviour of the world, haha! From the seeds, grow some wheat and use them to capture and breed sheep and cows.
Isn't my sheep pen colourful! Sheep can be coloured via dyes crafted from different flowers (yellow flower makes yellow dye etc). Use the dye chart for your desired colour!
Pigs are another common livestock, though they are a tad bit tricky at first. They are only attracted to either carrot, potatoes or beetroots, all of which can only be obtained in specific Minecraft structures. In other words, you need more exploring to gather these foods—all just for pigs!
While luring these animals, I spotted a turtle:
It seems so lonely. Give me some time; I'll architect a turtle sanctuary and breed you all to curb species extinction!
All in all, I think this basic Minecraft housing and farming is a good start to my Phase III journey. Look at how peaceful my land is!
Diligently establishing myself makes me wonder about the awaiting neighbouring adventures! I feel like I'm faring well in sustaining myself, so I decided to know my surrounding land even more. But that will be in my next blog post so stay tuned!
