Oh, so you play Minecraft?
Well, I have a quarter of my blog dedicated to Minecraft. So I am more than a mere player... I'm a BIG FAN of this game!
My first Minecraft blog post is about Minecraft YouTubers who mostly play in a single-player world. Recently I tuned in to several servers on YouTube and one particular survival multi-player (SMP) caught my attention--and affection.
Behold, a versatile SMP for everyone:
What is Hermitcraft?
Excellent basic number one question!
Hermitcraft is home to 20+ YouTubers, or "hermits"... because a home is a family! Each hermit has his/her overarching vision for the season, where their regular uploads would be their work progress with (a lot of) impromptu collaborations in between.
This server runs on seasons. At the time of writing, it is currently at the end of Season Seven.
Why watch Hermitcraft?
"Because it's funny?"
That, yes, though Hermitcraft has better to offer: the educational values and life lessons. Let's begin with the fundamentals of Minecraft:
#1 Hermitcraft, the definition of Minecraft Mega Builds
Each hermit may have different themes/objectives for the season, however, they share this particular similarity: the project's mega-scale.
When I say mega-scale, I imply the literal sense of MEGA: the humongous buildings that easily reach maximum build height and area barely covered by multiple Minecraft maps.
What are the hermits' build styles? Medieval, classic, art deco, modern, utopian-dystopian, fantasy, cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic architecture, you name it.
Did I just list every architectural feat there?
"I think you did, yeah."
Extending the definition further, most hermits don't merely construct ONE megabase. They have MULTIPLE mega builds to complement their overarching theme. In simple English, the hermits are building mega districts, towns, cities, industrial zones, you name it.
"And you compiled another list."
I can't help it, that's how comprehensive Hermitcraft mega-builds are!
At this point, Hermitcraft has more or less patented mega Minecraft builds. Imagine all the tricks you can copy *ahem, learn* to improve your own Minecraft world!
"I see what you did there."
Shush!
#2 Hermitcraft's Redstone is beyond Mob Farms
Hermits being hermits, are always clever and creative in everything they touch. Finding a farm for every farmable Minecraft resource is no surprise in Hermitcraft. My personal standing ovation, however, would be the hermits' innovative redstone-powered mini-games.
"Mini-games? That's games within a game... it's game-ception!!"
I see what you did there and I totally agree! So much so that Hermitcraft Season 7 featured two commendable mega-scale mini-game and one of them is Among Us, fully designed and constructed in vanilla Minecraft!
#3 Hermitcraft, a versatile Minecraft SMP
While building and redstone are the fundamentals of Minecraft, the hermits are better known for other skills including:
Minecraft-style story-telling via armour stands:
Movie trailer-esque video editing (with bespoke music too!):
Wacky contraptions that don't necessarily make things easier and simpler...
Or poetic memes.
Now you get why I say Hermitcraft is a versatile SMP?
"Well yes, but I don't understand the last 2 examples and the last one looked like the Suez--"
Moving on! Hermitcraft is more than Minecraft jargon and is a living advocate for the good old saying:
#4 Work hard and play much, much harder!
After all, playing in a multi-player world is to interact with other players. Here in Hermitcraft, you can see clusters of iconic groups, not just duos or trios. Hermits simply love mingling and supporting one another every time!
This is the quality I admire: a genuine friendship that extends beyond the SMP. And you know what usually happens when very good friends spend quality time together... the hilarious chats and elaborate shenanigans!
Fun fact, Hermitcraft has multiple server-wide events that stem from innocent, harmless pranks. It spearheaded Civil War in Season 6 whereas in Season 7, the Turf War.
"G... grass War???
The hermits may not have face cameras, though I can tell everyone is genuinely having fun in these mega-scale collaborations. They undoubtedly deserve these good times, since every work is a grind in survival mode.
"Hold on... survival?"
Oh, have I not mentioned this before?
#5 Hermitcraft makes survival enjoyable
"The hermits are building mega builds and redstone... they got to be playing in creative mode! Or commands?!"
Nope. It's survival, 100%. There are many methods to obtain resources in Minecraft, in which the traditional way is via mining. This involves grinding... and a lot of them. The hermits grind so much that resource gathering and building time-lapses are their video templates.
As pointed out in #2, resources can also be farmed using the redstone-way i.e. farming and trading. Excess blocks are then sold in the SMP's Shopping District.
In short, yes, these still demand a tedious amount of work. But hey, nothing is impossible with passion, persistence and hard work!
"Sounds like Hermitcraft motto."
... You're absolutely right. I'm patenting this.
"I see your point. What's the joy of playing in survival, though?"
Good question. This brings us to my next point of why everyone should watch Hermitcraft:
#6 Hermitcraft Survival: the parallels to our real-lives life lessons
Everyone has infinite brilliant ideas, but only a handful attempted them and only half of these succeeded. Similarly, it takes sheer determination to realise a Minecraft concept successfully. The hermits need meticulous planning prior to starting any project... some even involve spreadsheets!
Put differently, the hermits taught us long-term commitment: a quality to lead a meaningful, beautiful life.
After all, if things were easy, one would simply be taking everything for granted and therefore have a lesser sense of appreciation and gratitude.
I've been following Hermitcraft for two seasons now and I can genuinely feel the hermits' (and the communities') great sense of satisfaction when the projects are officially wrapped up!
"You're getting philosophical here."
Well, as said at the beginning of my blog: Hermitcraft is much more than temporary laughs.
This SMP's contribution to Minecraft game development is priceless!
Their best contribution, without any doubt, is the memories. Every moment is cherished and commemorated via a world download at the end of each season. So if you're feeling nostalgic, just hop into the Minecraft world via your own device!
"That's a very lovely way to connect with the Hermitcraft community as well. Speaking of which... Are there any toxic fanbases? You know, those who like to harass and compare YouTubers."
Interesting question. I'm no statistician, but I can firmly say...
#7 Hermit fans are among the most respectful, wholesome Minecraft community!
Idolisation, harassment or anything similar is almost non-existent in the Hermitcraft community. Do you know that when a hermit is harassed, other hermits will step up and politely ask their fanbase to stop?
"Whoa, are you for real?"
I am! This is made possible because communication is key!
The hermits have frequent meetings to communicate and catch up with one another. Issues will be discussed and together, as a group, will agree upon a solution.
These discussions may vary from a simple datapack instalment to a long-term commitment of inviting a new hermit to the server!
These are so cool... Now, where do I start?
Oh, this is a difficult question! I would suggest asking yourself the fundamental questions: what is your purpose for watching? What exactly are you following?
Are you after a specific Minecraft prowess, like building or redstone?
Or simply the Youtuber's personality and Minecraft journey?
After identifying this, the next factor would be your initial impressions. Watch as many hermits as you can and soon after, your Hermitcraft journey would come pretty naturally. Once you do, congratulations! Welcome to the most wholesome Minecraft community!!
Also a personal note...
Do not take the YouTube subscriber count as an indicator of any hermit's personality, Minecraft skills, video quality, etc. After all, the YouTube algorithm is a complex (and at times biased) tool that does not necessarily work in their favour.
Rest assured, the hermits are not the kind of YouTubers who aggressively promote their channel whenever, and wherever they can. 99% of their videos are uncongested with YouTube ads... most of them do not even set up donations or YouTube community perks.
So just sit back, relax and enjoy the Hermitcraft video. Till then, see ya!
