#006 My First Mineshaft

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

From my first spawn till now, I've been building, farming and breeding a legion of dogs. Now let's get back to the business of Minecraft: mining.

Once again, I set off to neighbouring lands (because no one wants a mine close to their house). And since I have an army of dogs, I randomly chose a few to come with me.

And off we go!

Mining in Minecraft

The goal of mining in Minecraft is to get diamonds. Like real life, diamonds are only formed deep down from the earth's crust. Minecraft diamonds are set to spawn at level Y-11 and below.

The average surface level we're standing is usually Y-75 so imagine how deep you have to dig! So here comes the pro tip for mining diamonds in Minecraft:

Find a cave. If you're lucky, you'll get a cave that goes all the way to the diamond level, like this one:

I traversed deeper into this cave. All that I see are the unloved... I mean, the *common* blocks: andesite, diorite, granite. And then I stumbled across something brown. A block that looked like... wood?

Minecraft Mineshaft

Yes, you guessed it right. it's a mineshaft—my first mineshaft, even! There's a mineshaft just at the back of my house!!

Now, I've watched enough Minecraft gamers on YouTube to know how dangerous mineshaft can be for a beginner like me. Then I stumbled across poisonous spiders. Knowing what it indicates, I proceeded with caution...

Sure enough, it's a poisonous spider spawner. Nailed my first spawner but to play safe, I destroyed it.

I'm underground for a VERY LONG time. A few in-game days, probably?

What do I think about Minecraft Mineshafts?

I am very excited about mineshafts. It's a good source for minecarts and rails:

Most importantly, they provide good loots and since mineshafts are meant as massive (long) structures, it simply means I have more free treasures to grab! These include name tags, diamonds and enchanted books.

The most precious treasure, of course, comprise particular seeds and enchanted golden apples.

Yes, the rare enchanted golden apples that Minecraft OG YouTuber, DanTDM spent (Minecraft in-game) ages to scour. Yet I got it so early into the game!

Treasures aside, the danger is lurking everywhere and I feared for my life, as well as my dogs. I'm not terrified of the mobs, but rather...

The pool of lava.

Yes, LAVA. On one occasion my dog actually pushed me into lava and I'm burnt to death. On another occasion, my dogs pushed each other and some were burned by lava.

I can respawn, but my dogs couldn't. Bringing my pets to mine is probably the worst idea ever.

RIP, my dearest pet dogs. You'll be missed. I shouldn't have brought you to mining in Minecraft although I do feel we all need adventure. Maybe don't stand too close to the lava-fall next time as well, hey?

I should have built some memorials for them, like how pewdiepie and jacksepticeye did. I'm too early in the game that I never thought of doing them.

You'll be missed dearly, my lost doggies!

Outro: my first emerald ore!

Look, emeralds! Emerald ores are much rarer than diamonds, although valued aren't as high. You can get emeralds from tranding with villagers, that's why.
